Nurses’ Health Study 3 is Recruiting Nurses!

The Nurses Health Study Aims to Help Us All Feel Better, Now and into the Future

Have you heard of the Nurses’ Health Study? Over 40 years ago some researchers had a brilliant idea. These researchers thought that organizing a group of nurses to provide detailed information about their habits, lifestyle, and medical experiences would make a great study. Boy, did they have a great idea! So much invaluable data and ideas for further research have come from this one study.

Participation is completely free. The reason I am writing these articles is to do my part to spread the word to all of my fellow nurses that you can invite yourself to join.

You DO NOT have to wait to get an invitation to join the Nurses Study. I had no idea, years ago when I first heard about it, I thought it was by invitation only.

Nurses' Health Study was successful because of the Nurses who participated

In this article, we’ll cover everything you need to know about the studies, and how you can become an important part of this groundbreaking research over your lifetime. I have been so impressed with the quality of the research that I am so excited that I got the opportunity.

I know you have read about medical breakthroughs that came from the Nurses’ Health Study 1 and 2. You just may not realize where they came from.

The current study has been ongoing since 2010 and you still have a chance to make the cutoff and contribute your life experiences to the data. Learn more about the history of Nurses’ Health Studies!

What Makes The Nurses’ Health Study So Important?

Research ideas start when someone connects a pattern to come up with a question. We examine those new questions by asking people about their experiences and testing through experiments. If people are unaware of the importance of their experiences or are not willing to be fully transparent then the data of a study is compromised and ends up being of limited value.

We have all realized over the years just how valuable the data provided by trained nurses have been. It has been so honest and so useful that these studies have become the go-to in women’s health over the last 40 years.

1200 Publications have used the Nurses' Health Study

Why Should I Join the Study Now Instead of Waiting?

In the past, the studies have moved on to the next generation as time passed. You have to take action now to get in before it is too late if you are born after 1965 this is your chance to make a difference.

I am not sure how much longer the generation born after 1965 will still be the primary focus. Sooner than later they will start the 4th cohort study which will probably cut off the birth year around 1985.

Almost 300,000 nurses have participated to date. Do not miss your generation’s opportunity to continue the historic medical breakthroughs that have come over the years.

I feel a sense of pride about the nurses' health study

Current Research Focus of Today’s Nurses’ Health Study 3

The Current Study, NHS 3, looks at the dietary patterns, lifestyle, environment, and nursing occupational exposures that affect men’s and women’s health.

The study is also looking closely at women’s health issues related to hormones and fertility/pregnancy. They are putting a greater focus on adolescent diet and breast cancer risk. While researching on PubMed I discovered the earlier Nurses Health Study 1 & 2.

After further research, I found out the current study is still recruiting my generation. They follow us throughout our lives once you have joined but if you don’t join before they start on a new generation you will not be able to participate.

  • Smoking: Correlated to having a higher likelihood of many diseases, including Many Cancers, Vascular DX, MS, Eye DX, etc when you are around smoke.
  • Trans Fat: This study ultimately led to trans fat being added to U.S. food labels in 2003 and is seen as GRAS by the FDA
  • Obesity: They found a correlation between CVD, and many cancers seen in people at the same rates as smoking. This came as a huge eye-opener at the time.
  • Postmenopausal Hormone Therapy: Click above to see data on lower risks of CVD for women taking these but also had a higher risk of breast cancer
  • Oral Contraceptives: After much study, it has shown a lower risk of ovarian cancers but little difference in CVD or Breast cancer risks
  • Exercise: Click above to see how daily activity lowers the risk of all diseases, notably Diabetes, Insulin Resistance, CVD, and cancers.

History of the Nurses’ Health Study?

The Nurses’ Health Study is a long-term research study that began in 1976. It was initiated by researchers at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and has followed over 275,000 registered nurses in the United States.

The study’s primary focus is on women’s health and has produced important findings related to breast cancer, heart disease, and other health issues. All Nurses are encouraged to participate.

Since Nurses are such a huge population of trained professionals they are more likely to provide honest and thoughtful answers than untrained laypeople. This made the research so much more impactful.

Studies:

  • The First Nurses’ Health Study participants born between 1921 and 1946
  • Nurses’ Health Study II participants born between 1946 and 1964
  • Current Nurses’ Health Study (3) participants born in 1965 or later

Nurses’ Health Study #3

The third iteration of the Nurses’ Health Study began in 2010 and is currently ongoing for Female and Male Nurses born after 1965. The primary goal of Nurses’ Health Study #3 is to examine the impact of childhood, lifestyle, and environmental factors on nurses’ health. Participants complete regular surveys about their health, lifestyle, and environment, and researchers analyze the data to identify patterns and correlations. Every 6 months you will receive an email invitation to fill out a thoughtful questionnaire about your medical and lifestyle experiences over your personal and professional life.

What are the Benefits of Joining Nurses’ Health Study #3

You’ll have access to valuable health information and resources that are quite thought-provoking. As I filled out the first questionnaire I was struck by how uncommon it is to be exposed to smoking today.

When I was a child it was a regular occurrence to be surrounded by smoke by family at home and strangers in public. I realized as I was completing the survey that this simply doesn’t happen today to kids in normal society today.

Joining Nurses’ Health Study #3 offers many benefits to you. First, you’ll know you will be contributing to important research that can help improve all of our health for generations to come.
